Groovy Baby Blanket

I cast on to make a fast & mindless little project for the store. It's a Super Easy Baby Blanket and I'm using Dream In Color Groovy, which is thicker than the yarn suggested, so it is working up at a nice clip. When I have time to knit at work I'm getting one colour block done per day (4 down, 3 to go). 

I cast on 100 sts and it is about 34" wide un-stretched. I am working each colour for 32 to 34 rows (depends on how much yarn there is, some skeins seem to have a bit less yardage), which is between 5.25 & 5.5" each. To see if I have enough to work another 2 rows I measure 6 times the width of the blanket (3x per row).

Ruminating on Kid Things

I'm thinking about making something for my niece, who is 3 months old this week. The only thing is that she's a grower and I'm not really sure what size she's going to take from week to week, and what size she'll be in any given season. Moreover, she's gigantic (in the 95th percentile for weight and height), and I don't know if she's going to take after my father and I and be tall, or if she'll slow down after a year and fit regular kid sizes. Maybe I should just make whatever project I choose in a 2 year old size?

My sister-in-law put in a request for a felted jumper, which isn't going to happen in knitting - poor kid would cook. But I do love this little dress from Berroco's Remix Booklet #303.   The sizes range from 2 to 12 years, so the sizing issue could work out.

I would use colour 3956, dungaree (light blue). I think it's a safe colour for a pale kid, and she seems to look great in blue. It only takes 3 skeins to make a size 2 (also 4 and 6), and the price is right at $11 each, so it's not the end of the world if she mucks it up. And the yarns is completely washable, so this one is a definite maybe.

Knitting Pure and Simple Baby Tunic

I've also been thinking about making a little hoodie for her. I love this version by KimDillard, and I have some Koigu Kersti kicking around, but I don't think it's a good colour for my niece. It is rose with highlights of royal blue, pumpkin and black. It sounds bad, but it's not, it's just too dark and too pink.

Another option is Dream in Color Classy in "Some Summer Sky". It should be a great colour on her, and when we go to the park it'll be really easy to keep track of her.

Before

I did it (hum the theme from Rocky to yourself)! It took me until 4am last night, but I got it done in time for the baby shower - a full fledged sweater gender reassignment surgery! Note, in the Before photo, it's a Tulips cardigan, and in the After, a Rocketry. The patient is presently recovering with his new family. 

The new ribbing is a K2 P1 - a nice alternative to 1x1 or 2x2. I still don't like the yellow in the colour mix, the balance is off, it is too pale, but otherwise I'm satisfied.

Remember this little number? It is a Tulips in Dream in Color Classy that I was never particularly satisfied with, it just didn't look right (sometimes my mojo is off, it happens once in a while). But Lisa liked it, and I always intended to give it to her when she had a baby. Bu after washing it in preparation for gifting, it just didn't sit right with me. It started nagging and taunting. You know what came next ..... RIP!  This is the beauty of a top-down knit: you can edit. I've pulled out all of the yellow trim and am replacing it with a plain 2x2 rib in dark blue.  Will I get it done in time for the shower tomorrow? Anything can happen .....  ;-)

Finished Object Alert! Gnarled Cable Beret

Finished object alert!  Liane just finished whipping up this cool cabled beret, the Gnarled Cable Beret (free pattern on Ravelry.com). We managed to eke it out with just one skein on Dream in Color Groovy (colour is visual purple). The cables are really cool, I love wonky looking things.  :-)  I think it would also look good in the Cascade 128, Malabrigo or Merino Chunky. Maybe even Cascade Eco Heathers, but I can't be sure about that one. Anyway, nice cabled beret that looks a bit different. :-)

Groovy Kids Jacket

Our 'Groovy' kids jacket in Dream in Color is knitting up beautifully!  the colour is so beautiful, they do a wonderful job at subtle dyeing. We just have a bit more arm and some zipper action and then it'll be ready for display!

The next store project is our "Groovy Jacket". It's actually a Knitting Pure and Simple pattern, Children's Bulky Neckdown Jacket (#249), but we're making it in Dream in Color Groovy (pansy golightly). The yarn is knitting up BEATIFULLY! I like the jacket, it kind of reminds me of those old fashioned curling sweaters.

february baby sweater

 
i finished my february baby sweater last week. i cheated and knit the arms in the round.  it looks very cute. the yarn colour actually looks ok with the lace. but more importantly, i got to use some of my strange coloured vintage glass butttons.clearly, baby clothes are what odd colouured vintage buttons were made for. it only took 1 skein of dream in colour classy, not bad!

people have been commenting on the Dream in Colour yarn, saying that it is very well priced. well, that it was, becuase i accidentally priced it incorrectly, at the cost price.  so if you got it for $11.80, lucky you, but the price has now been adjusted to $22. 

good news, i got a sofa for the store!  i will post pictures tomorrow. it is a very nice sofa, which i have spent many hours cleaning with Eucalan.

Finito!

I finished the Rocketry Baby Cardigan and the kit for it today! With my revisions the sweater looks great! I could have made the increases look prettier but I did not want to make the kit overly complicated and of course the sample has to match the product for sale. I also managed to get the kits finished too! It is the most comprehensive kit I've created. I've tried to provide as much information as possible on the label so clients can grab it and go up to the cottage/on a plane, etc. I also included both of the patterns, the original from Dream in Color, and my revised version. Now I must turn my attentions to the Tulips Baby Cardigan, again revised because I know that most people are uneasy with colours like peach and bile yellow, but also because of the taboo against dressing a boy in pink or purple. I think I have devised the colour scheme and I'm going to set out and test it tonight.
