i got to see michelle on sunday. she lured me into work, she needed a yarn fix (you can do that if you offer me a lift).

so what has michelle been up to this summer? see picture above. lucy is growing, like REALLY growing. she's gotta be half michelle's size now and she isn't even quite a year yet (almost, but not officially). i suspect that Lucy will be the first supermodel to win the nobel peace prize for being a supermodel.

koigu sock progress, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

sock action taking place. i love the addi turbos/magic loop for the socks, the project is so much more portable and easier to knit now. accomplished mores at Deborah's b-day party last night. meaghan and her leather-clad other half alex took excellent care of us with home made mojitos and bbq. mmmmmeat.

it was a very satisfying party, a good time was had by all. the loot bags were an especially nice touch and i went home with my very own tiara. i'll be washing the dishes in regal style from now on! we were talking about how hallowe'en is our favourite holiday (even better than passover!) and while Deborah was out of the room Meaghan and Alex & I decided to throw a Hallowe'en party at Deborah's this year. and we're going all out. spooky food, graveyard on the front lawn, monster mash playing on the stereo, simpsons hallowe'en specials playing on the DVD, and everyone has to come in costume! i can put that tiara to good use!

singing Parrot
this keeps consistently cracking me up. the funniest part is when the bird first starts singing a few seconds into the song: "la-la-la-la"! and the dancing. my bike was stoled 2 nights ago. i'm in mourning. shiva at knit-o-matic. happy 60th birthday bob marley. condolences to Pluto, which is no longer a planet because it doesn't have COMPLETE gravitational control of the bodies surrounding it. too much emphasis on control if you ask me. boo!

i finished sock no 1 last night at my brother's surpride b'day party. it was ver satisfying knitting. told his other half, katie, that i will make her socks. even more satisfying is the fact that katie's feet are about an inch shorter than mine!

- koigu KPPPM 118A (50g/160m) - 2mm/40cm addi turbo (now i know why they're called addis, they're addictive! at least for magic loop) - wendyknits toe up sock pattern - 1 sock = 31g

sally

sally_lg, originally uploaded by myhighfiber. check this out: .... you can make your own candy Skulls for Dia de los Muertos (or any old celebration of the dead). You can also make dead bread, but it isn't as graphically satisfying. when my friend in san fran got married his wedding band was a silver ring of little skulls (a skully anniversary band) and a few years ago for their anniversary his wife had little ruby eyes set into the sockets. another friend's husband got married with skully cuff links. shiver me timbers! ... excellent new single out from God Made me Funky featuring Thrust. My friend doodlebug used to play with them. are they sampling the theme from the munsters or the adams family? i can't for the life of me remember where "come on, get your back up off the wall, dance" is from ... ...early madonna ...... "get into the groove"! (amazing thing .. i got dragged along to spehora with deborah when i bought my mom a makeover. they were playing early Madonna, very apropos for a makeup store, and i knew ALL the lyrics! didn't know it was lingering down in there. karaoke here i come!) 'sacroiliac' is a reference to Maestro Fresh Wes's "let your backbone slide" - he's also on GMMF's upcoming album. although, i noticed the maestro is also on a late night soap on Omni about a bunch of artists living in a distillery type neighbourhood in downtown toronto. ... and finally, an interesting shaped sweater from Berroco: Sally. Not crazy about the yarn, especially for Canada, but the shaping is very cool, it's fashiony! sub anything worsted or aran.

renika, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

renika popped by yesterday with her mamouth merino blanket. i knew she was still working on it, but it wasn't in the part of my brain that does the stuff that needs to be done.

the blanket is looking so Groovy! all different textures and colours melting into each other. thankfully christa was around (i was helping her with her humungus avacado dog sweater). christa has a great eye for colour and style (she's a fashion designer with her own line of clothing) and she picked out this italian, grapey purple that looked totally avant garde with the others.

slipper too big

slipper too big, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

put the slippers in the freezer over night. washed them this morning, again, with jeans & towels & everything lighter than an anville (you know, Acme brand). still about an inch too long. i'll give them another go but i'm going to have to wear my jeans first to get them dirty. i think i've run out of heavy dirty clothes to felt with. maybe i should get a few pairs just for felting at the goodwill next time they have a sale ... good idea waxberg, you get a gold star!

anyway, i'm uneasy about writing a pattern with a yarn that doesn't felt properly. the colour is great (me so smart, me so talented) but i don't want to be accountable for something that doesn't work properly. bummer, i was hoping to have the pattern ready this week. other things have slowed me down also. my obsession with the Babette blanket, a pair of spontaneous socks, work, a pattern that i have to work up & photograph tonight for an upcoming book, life.

babette squares

babette squares, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

more squares made yesterday at work. but this has to be a home project, i can't carry all the yarn around with me every day. too many yarns!

sp i figured out that every medium sized square i complete equals 0.48% of blanket. that means i made 3.84% blanket yesterday.

bag

bag, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

the shoppers i made for my cousin's wedding (this saturday) were too bright, i don't think his partner will like them. i'm making them some more metrosexualized ones in denim yarn. the dark indigo colour is coming off on my hands (it happens, that's why new jeans come with a warning about washing), but they look very Caban (now going out of buisness).

big slipper

slipper, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

what the F$%#@%!& Hell is wrong with this yarn?!! the kureyon is giving me the colouration i wanted for the slippers, but the stuff won't felt! it's fuzzy, but barely shrunk. an article on knitty says this may happen. i put them in the fridge to cool off (sent them to their room to think about what they did) and i'll throw them in ice water before I try again. but i'm also going to make up another pair in another, reliable yarn. i'd feel guilty posting a pattern in a yarn that's a pain in the arse. screw the colour, screw this yarn, i'll just use my artistic abilities to make it look interesting.

blanket

this moody shot is brought to you by my toes (bottom of the pic, the thing on the right is my lamp) and by bad interior lighting. it takes me back to the days in grad school when all the students shot slides for seminars with our fingers in them. so here are the beginnings of my babette blanket. i took some mission Falls 1824 wool home to fill in some of the colour gaps (i was getting bored with the yarns i was trying to use up). the mission falls wool is soooo nice! so soft, i've started to resent the leftovers i'm using up, although aesthetically it makes the palette much more interesting. i did some math this morning and figured out that i've completed 16.8% of the blanket (i'm making it big to fit on a bed, 6300 inches squared). it was a little disappointing at first, i've gotten a bit spoiled with the instant gratification of the small summer projects. but hey, 17% is a very good chunk for just a few days. Finished to date: 26 medium squares 4 small squares 2 large squares approximately 126 m of yarn will be required for the inner border and 129m of yarn for the outer border. i love math.

slipper

making a slipper pattern, and slippers. i tried to felt them yesterday but something was wrong with the washer at the store.

i was a bit bored yesterday. i was updating the freebies and started reading a knit blog. i know, i don't read blogs. well, i didn't really read it, but it was fun & funny & informative and i liked it alot: knit and tonic. got to the PHOTO ALBUMS at the bottom of the left column and check out the WINNERS & LOSERS sections and you will be informed & amused. I really liked her not so shrunken cardigan. i have some lavold silkywool in my stash that i'm going to dye for the project. the somewhat cowl is great too, like that a lot. i've gotta go slog though the shopping guide on style.com to decided on a colour. i also kinda dig this sweater by berroco, Kyra, but if i see any more self striping yarn (expcet socks) i'm gonna vomit in stipes.

addenda

oops! i forgot a few nuggets. 1. i learned how to make a pull skein by hand! 2. i learned something very useful from Liane: when storing yarn, put it in a ziplock with BAY LEAVES to keep it smelling fresh. 3. i kept wondering why my cousin's upcoming wedding (the shoping bags) was on a tuesday night ... duh?! i looked up the date, it's next saturday. i wonder what is on tuesday? i'm sooooo pretty!

Babette Blanket

BabetteBlanket, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

last night's SNB was pretty sedate, mostly me & carla & ramona. Everyone seems to be out of town right now. can't blame 'em, i would be too (if i had somewhere to go). ramona is excellent company, i love it when she comes to visit and hang out. i taught her how to make socks last night. i've received reports that the eureka moment came and she is happily ensconced with sock yarns. she picked up the last 2 balls of red striped Regia i was eyeing yesterday. i'm secrety happy to say that romona is the only person who also liked the mashed banana opal handpaint. she's a real artist, we get each other. and i'm still going to make mashed banana knee-high socks.

last night when i got home i started playing around with some off balls of superwash wool i had around the house & started working on the above blanket. it's a long term scrap project, but it is easy and mindless and gratifying. i was watching austin powers at the time, i can only assume it was a motivating factor if not a catalyst. Liane is working on a striped baby sweater for the store in Mission falls 1824 wool and i'm eyeing the extra yarn greedily. wha-ha-ha! (my evil laugh)

one of my favourite things are utilitarian patterns and one just popped up for universal short row socks! it's a never have to look for a sock pattern again pattern. i relate to it, it's a very knitting store owner pattern, the kind people keep asking you for and nobody has written, so you just go and do it yourself and publish it on the web. blah! so there!
