neuze (& linda)

nuze, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

where's linda? why don't i have a picture of linda? she's in the back, touching the bamboo again. she covets the Madil Bamboo. I think we've finally found her a hot little tank from Knit Simple (#4, omit the cake decorations) to go with her soon to be wave skirt.

in the foreground is Neuze, who until today i only knew by reputation as the chocolate lady. Neuze just wrote a cook book completely based on chocolate. my goal is to bribe her into coming in as frequently as possible. if i successd, however, i'll have to get a stair-master for in store use. Neuze is showing laura a Stitch Diva pattern from the summer issue of Interweave. I also like Neuze because she's got great taste :-)

laura

laura is happy because she's smarter than she initially thought she was. silly laura, wait till she finds out that she's still even smarter. yes, laura can crochet, she's making the skirt from Stitch N Bitch crochet. laura & linda are some of my favourite people.

save the portrait gallery of canada

SAVE THE PORTRAIT GALLERY OF CANADA!
To people who haven't heard, the Portrait Gallery of Canada has been in the works for close to a decade. It has already collected over 1,000,000 drawings, paintings and photographs. Initiated by public choice, and under the wing of the National Archives of Canada, the Portrait Gallery plans to open in the building formerly occupied by the American Embassy. The location is brilliant! It is situated on Wellington Street, directly across the street from the Parliament Buildings. Built in 1932 in Neo-Beaux-Arts style, the scale of the rooms is ideally suited to portraiture. The building has been gutted, and architect's plans have been drawn and approved. A large addition has been planned. It has been given the spot it deserves, where everyone can see it and find it. It is a statement about how we value our culture. It is one of the most exciting and intelligent things to happen in Canada in many years. It establishes and re-affirms our history. It captures our imagination. It reminds us of our past. There is nothing like portraits to do exactly that.
Now, as part of an effort to trim $2 billion dollars off its overall expenditures, the Conservative government has placed the Portrait Gallery under review. Construction has been halted, and there is an agenda in place that wishes to have the project abandoned, or at the very best moved to some less visible location in order ostensibly to "save money". We can't let this happen! We must write or email the Prime Minister, outlining our views and our indignation. Now is the time to act! THIS IS AN URGENT SITUATION! Collectively we can stop this preposterous plan. The Conservative government is pushing culture aside. Imagine what a loss this will be to us, our neighbours from abroad, and to future generations.
Rise up Canadians! Voice your opinion! Let Stephen Harper and Bev Oda, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women know how you feel. Let your MP know too. S/He's important!

Thank you for helping to save this most valuable Canadian asset! It will add significantly to the process of creating a strong identity for all citizens of Canada and for visitors from abroad.

stitch diva's celebrity shawl ... been itching to accomplish this one since last summer. crochet is just so much more portable in the summer. actually got it done in 2 days (after an evening of struggling to figure out the pattern ... will teach a class on it now that i've got it down and have learned lots of lessons on what to do & not to do, it's so easy once the principle is absorbed). it's a fast crochet, a great gift project. made mine from 2 skeins of Rainbow Sari Silk ... looks FABULOUS! photos to follow, patt avail in store if you want. and if you must must must learn it now we can always do a private class.

finally! pictures of the bolero i made for my mom for mother's day (well, i started it for her on motjher's day). make fron 3 skeins fo Colinette Giotto. photos very quickly taken on Sunday before my cousin's batmitzvah at the brand new (the very pretty old clubhouse burned down 2 years ago) Island Yacht Club (i really like the new club house, it's got an industrial aesthetic, reminds me of the BYO modular dwelling ReadyMade magazine), really comfortable, utilitarian and unpretentious. it doesn't have the 'this is an exclusive club and you don't belong here' exclusivity that other places do. i think accessability is important for the IYC since it was established because Jews were not permitted to join other clubs.

smiley shopper

crochet shopper, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

i'm doin' sooo good! i finished apattern for a store kit. it's so good to have my grey cells back, they were missed. i wen't back over my crochet shopper pattern from last year and boy was it a mess. ma pauver cervelle! anyway, i edited the pattern so it is lucid and made them into kits! decided that the patterns i make for the store will only be sold with the kits. i'm not freaky about being copied, i just don't have much interest being a 'pattern designer'. i'm an artist, i like kits, they're like little post capitolist ready-mades for other people to do at their leisure. i kinda like it in the pseudo neon colours ... ooooh, the 80s are coming back!

last night's SNB was so much fun, i had a really good time, it was very relaxing. Ramona & Meaghan & Liane came by and we hung around till late joking around. Sophie dropped in earlier which also always brightens my day. i tried to teach Ramona her first crochet pattern ... i'm not sure if i was successful, but she is very smart, i know it will sink it. thanks for making it a fun night!

partners in crime Originally uploaded by sharkseason.
i like this too. i like all of it, but the hats are really good. i think i'll send it to uri, he used to take photos of dinosaur toys. his wife eva will get a kick out of it. actually, come to think of it, i had a boyfriend in college who had one of his posters in his dorm room ... goes to show my supreme taste in men! :-) i don't have any pics, but maggie's diaper bag is close to being done. i finished the handles, managed to graft them together with much consternation during 'how to get the guy' last night. now all i have to do is make the pockets, sew in pockets and felt. maybe crochet around the handles, then felt. it was a very easy pattern, i hope it works and i'll publish it. if it doesn't work it'll sit on the back burner untill i get the energy to fix it and then publish it. but you haven't seen it so you don't know what i want it to look like, the idea is just sorta hanging in my head. wa-ha-ha- (evil laugh)!

i finished a bolero for my mom yesterday. forgot to take a picture, duh! i'll do it at an upcoming butmitzvah. it took forever to finish the thing, it was made in Colinette Giotto and was a bitch to sew up. although, i found the prefect button at Mac Fab, a retro shank button makde of pink shell, the last of its kinds and bleached by the sun to the perfect salmon pink to match the yarn. what else is going on? slippers for my brother's girlfriend. they're pretty fast, doing them in Noro Silk Garden, but the pattern is one of those downloads from the web and isn't very clear. sigh! why must i suffer so?! ;-) oh, i'm trying to organize a stitch & bitch/wine class (a stitch & vintage?). summer is so slow and it's so much easier to get around town in the good weather, so i fured now would be a good time. I'd like to do it at the CVA (centre for vine affairs) 'cause i know they're the real thing and they are located centrally at the swank Crush wine bar at King & Spadina. i'm looking forward to knowing what i'm buying when i pick up a bottle as a gift.! i've got a few takers who aren't afraid of a little pretension (i suspect it is not actually pretentions, just people think of wine tasting that way), but need more warm bodies to make it happen. if you are interested just contact me at info@knitomatic.com.
