Oops! I forgot, I'm holding a yarn swap!
logo 1

We're Holding a Yarn Swap!
Happy Birthday!
To celebrate Knit-O-Matic's 4th birthday and our owner Haley's 35th Birthday we're holding a yarn swap party! Refreshments will be served and yarn fun will be had by all. Attendance is FREE and you don't have to partake in the yarn swap if you don't want to.

What is a Yarn Swap?
A yarn swap is a big eco-friendly redistribution of yarn, needles and craft supplies. Bring in the crafty stuff you never want to see again and deposit it in one of our baskets. Poke around at all the other donations and take whatever you like. If you don't have any yarn to bring that's ok, you can still take whatever you like. Don't be embarrassed by the quality of yarn you bring, whatever is left over is donated to charities like Street Knit, Sistering Toronto, Women's Shelters and the Hospital for Sick Children, most of whom prefer acrylic!

Where & When?

Rhapsody in Concrete ....

It's a five year old's wonderland! Does your yarn store have big yellow diggers parked outside? The barriers are reminiscent of the Santa Claus Parade!

Does your yarn store have two big, rusty, metal things outside? I think the white things on the sides are buckets. Are they going in the ground or coming out? OOoooooo! Nobody Knows!

Does your yarn store have TWO big blue construction disposal bins outside?! Come on down and see them! Bring your industrial garbage!

New Pattern!

Sunrise Crochet Shrug Buy Now

By Liane Schwarz & Haley Waxberg

This is a simple, easy to crochet shrug with raglan shaping and short sleeves. You can use any type of worsted weight yarn, but keep in mind that anything with a significant amount (30% or more) of silk in it will grow of it's own accord. Suggestions are included if you want to make the sleeves longer or cinch in the back. The back is made separately from the arms, which are then sewn on (don't worry, it's easy!) and then the border is worked around.

Upcoming Knitting Events

"No Idle Hands" film and video screening on June 10th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"No Idle Hands"
Curated by Sabrina Gschwandtner
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 8pm
Light Industry
55 33rd Street, 3rd Floor
Brooklyn, NY
Ticket Price - $6
Handcraft--absorbing, obsessive, mysterious, political, communal
and mythical--is the subject of these documentaries, which range
from exhaustively researched to casually recorded and even imagined.
Works include:
"Kusama's Self-Obliteration," Yayoi Kusama/Jud Yalkut, 16mm,
1964, 24 mins
The film was conceived as a portrait of the Yayoi Kusama and her
work of two decades, and a progressively involving and engrossing
experience that could possibly project the viewer into the screen.
"When This You See...", Elaine Reichek, video, 1998, 17 mins
Nine appropriated film clips from sources such as Heavenly
Creatures (1994) and Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) show women
stitching. Each segment reveals a dramatic moment in the movie's
story, and then ends with a freeze-frame over which the artist
superimposes a single word, cataloging the act ("betrayal,"
"revolution," "revenge," etc) each woman's handcraft symbolizes.
"Odd Fellows," Alee Peoples, Super-8 to video, 2006, 5 mins
A short documentary on the Odd Fellows, a fraternal order begun
in England as an offshoot of the Masons.
"Paracas," Cecilia Vicuña, 16mm to video, 1993, 18 mins
Conceived as a visual and sound poem in seven scenes, this
animation of a 2,000 year-old textile now in the collection of the
Brooklyn Museum invites entrance into a different visual and sonic
space. The textile, interpreted here as a celebration of the Thread
of Life, was constructed in a sculptural, three-dimensional looping
technique developed by the ancient artists of the Paracas/Nazca
region of Peru.
"Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft and Design"
(excerpt from the feature film to be released 2009), Faythe Levine,
video, 20 mins
A documentary exploring the rise of DIY art, craft, and design in
the United States. The heart of this new wave of creativity is the
community, which is equally influenced by traditional handiwork,
modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Faythe Levine,
Elaine Reichek and Cecilia Vicuña.
Curated by Sabrina Gschwandtner, visual artist, author of "KnitKnit:
Profiles and Projects from Knitting's New Wave" (2007), and
contributor to the Journal of Modern Craft, Cabinet, and Selvedge,
among many other publications. www.knitknit.net/sabrina
Edibles will be available from Sweet Tooth of the Tiger, a renegade
bakery project that explores a nostalgia for the bake sale through the
performance of social engagement over sugary confections.
About Light Industry
Light Industry is a new venue for film and electronic art in Brooklyn,
New York. Developed and overseen by Thomas Beard and Ed
Halter, the project has begun as series of weekly events in Sunset
Park this spring and summer, each organized by a different artist,
critic, or curator.
Conceptually, Light Industry draws equal inspiration from the long
history of alternative art spaces in New York as well its storied
tradition of cinematheques and other intrepid film exhibitors.
Through a regular program of screenings, performances, and lectures,
its goal is to explore new models for the presentation of time-based
media and foster a complex dialogue amongst a wide range of artists
and audiences within the city.
more slpeen
i'm still working on the "what makes you hate a LYS" ravelry thread from yesterday - page 37. i don't normally read a lot of this online stuff, i prefer looking at pictures. there's a lot of spleen being vented! gleaning some insights into people, some things i'd rather not know - about people in general, not specific individuals. this thread is HILARIOUS!
Friday, May 16, 2008
i should blog but i have some residual shipping and i've been sucked into the "what makes you hate a LYS" thread on ravelry - thanks lynne!
Progress Marches On ...
The progress on my Sahara in Dave Svale. I just started the bottom border last night, so not long now! I'm making it longer, I want a tunic for sailing & etc.
The stolen pattern issue has been resolved by asking for my pattern to be taken down. It seems that to get etsy to take it down you have to lawyer up.
I've been sick with a cold since monday. I decided to get back to the starbuck revisions, but it confused even me, so i decided to approach it from a different point of view, from the top down. one i figure out the starting numbers it'll fly.
my mantra is KISSASS: keep it simple, sexy and stylish stupid.
Oy, long bar & bat mitzvah yesterday in niagara falls! the kids kicked ass, they practically led the whole service.
today was going to be weaving in the ends on the instant grat sweater & maybe some pictures if the light was good, show you the sahara progress, but i came into a problem in my e-mail. A young woman who goes by the psedonym "The Bag Doll" (www.thebagdoll.blogspot.com) has takem my Eco Warrior Crochet Bag pattern, including the photo, and is selling it on Etsy as her own .... for the sake of posterity i'll post the listing below, since etsy will be taking it down soon (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=10465132). i'm not a copyright nazi, but she didn't even ask me! So i took some time to write to Etsy, and while i was doing that i decided to take a peek and see if she's stolen any others .... several. as a good citizen i wrote to another 3 people to let them know about their own burglaries.
I was going to contact the bag doll and yell a bit but i think i'd prefer it if Etsy just comes down on her hard & heavy.
I wasn't able to use a button on this page, you you can see it on the real web page. As soon as I'm added to the system I'll make it a ravelry download.
