Dia-Mitts free knitting pattern for mittens

Dia-Mitts

Size

Women’s M (4” wide across hand, 5” wide across palm with thumb gusset)

Materials

• 5mm/7.5” double pointed needles

• 2 to 3 balls of Diakeito DiaJudy 40g/52yds or 105m of Bulky weight yarn (calls for a 6mm to 6.5mm needles, like Lamb’s Pride Bulky Superwash; note: these mitts were made for a person with long fingers, you might get away with using 95m of yarn)

• 2 stitch markers

• small stitch holder or scrap yarn or large safety pin

• Darning needle

Gauge

16 sts & 23 rows = 4”/10cm

Abbreviations

K knit

K2tog knit 2 stitches together

M1 increase: from the front, lift loop between stitches with left

needle, knit into back of loop. (also called M1L)

M1L increase slanting to the left: from the front, lift loop between

stitches with left needle, knit into back of loop

M1R increase slanting to the right: from the back, lift loop between

stitches with left needle, knit into front of loop

P Purl

R Round or row

Rep Repeat

St st Stocking Stitch (Knit 1 row, Purl 1 row)

Techniques

Backward loop cast on

Instructions

• Cast on 30 sts on 3 double pointed needles & join in round making sure not to twist sts.

Cuff

• Work in K1, P1 rib for 2.75”

• Knit round, M1 at last sts (31 sts)

Thumb Gusset

R1: K15, place marker, M1L, k1, M1R, place marker, knit to end. (3 gusset sts between markers)

R2: Knit

R3: k to marker, slip marker, M1L, k to next marker, M1R, slip marker, k to end (5 gusset sts between markers)

R4 & R5: Knit

R6: same as R3. (7 gusset sts between markers)

R7 & R8: knit

R9: same as R3. (9 gusset sts between markers)

R10 & R11: knit

R12: same as R3. (11 gusset sts between markers)

R13: k to marker, remove marker, place gusset sts on stitch holder, cast on 1 sts with the backward loop method, k to end of round. (31sts)

Top of Hand

K until work measures to top of little finger of 1.5” less than desired total length.

• *K8, k2 tog; repeat from * to end. (28 sts)

• *K5, k2 tog; repeat from * to end. (24sts)

K 1 round.

• *K4, k2 tog; repeat from * to end. (20sts)

K 1 round.

• *K3, k2 tog; repeat from * to end. (16sts)

K 1 round.

• *K2, k2 tog; repeat from * to end. (12sts)

• *K1, k2 tog; repeat from * to end. (8sts)

Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining sts, pull tight & fasten off.

Thumb

Pick up gusset sts on holder on 3 dpn

Working in round k12, pick up & knit 4 sts. (16sts)

K12, k2tog, k2tog. (14sts)

Work in round until thumb measures to middle of tumbnail (1.5” from pick-up round)

Top of Tumb

• *K2 tog, k2; repeat from * to end. (10 sts)

K 1 round.

• *K2 tog, k1; repeat from * to end. (7 sts)

• *K2 tog; repeat from * to end. (4 sts)

Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining sts, pull tight & fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. The mitten shown is turned inside out (reverse stocking stitch side).
