On the knit-o-matic needles

DKPurseDetail, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

Here's Diva's original picture of the Hobo Bag. Chelle is graciously working on this for the store 'cause i just think it's so groovy.

The pattern says it's for experienced knitters. i don't think it's for super-duper experienced knitters, but it uses a few tricks to make the bag a professional quality you'd want to really use, so I'd say it's for the adventureous. It uses double knitting to line it! I was going to just do it in pink in Lana Gatto Aton but chelle says it's really difficult to work the double knitting in a single colour so we quickly added some orange (i know it sounds halucious, i think 'Chelle may need glasses to defray the glare from the colour, but i wanted to save the really good colours for the customers).
personally, i think the light & dark brown combo would make a stunning classic colour combo, but i also like the green with the lighter brown. http://www.needfulyarnsinc.com/yarns.php

Aton, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

Here is the shade card of Needful's Lana Gatto Aton, the pseudo suede i'm using for the stitch diva Hobo Bag. Why Aton? It's imported directly from Italy to Canada so it costs a lot less: $10.50 CAD versus $10 USD + shipping + duty for the Berroco equivalent.

lacy top hemp for knitting, originally uploaded by myhighfiber.

people are always asking me if i knit all the store samples. i wish i had the time, but sadly, no. i have a few happy elves with needles who help me out so you can see what patterns look like and how yarns knit up.

This is my spring/summer choice for the new HempMadame de la Lace is working this one up in sapphire (it's her fave colour to work with). I love the lace in the pattern but i also like the washability of the textile since it's for the warm weather. I once heard someone say that horses sweat, men perspire and ladies glow. lets just say i'm inclined towards arid climates and i tend to glow all summer. ;-)

close-up of the raglan with no plan in Diakeito Diamusee. started as a particular pattern but i just moved into raglan mode, don't know what i'll do to the edges, proabably some crochet of some kind or use another Diakeito yarn. it will have to tell me what it wants to be. the yarn is gorgeous to knit with and to look at. since i was working bottom up & have a limited amount of yarn i figured i'd do the arms last & knit them down, so it might end up a 3/4 sleeve. still, the yarn is going far, and it's light as a feather! amazing stuff, like the slight shimmer too. it's happy knitting. a lady stopped me on the street today and remarked on it (i knit while i walk to work when i can)

more than 1 skein wonder closeup skein

i feel so guilty, it looks like i haven't been doing anything, but really i've been as busy as i can be. my more than 1 skein wonder is almost finished, just needs to be blocked & a few ends woven in. here is a closeup of the yarn (Noro Silverthaw, highly recommened for aesthetic and tactile pleasure). It weighs in at 260g, so technically it should be a 3 skein wonder, but i cut out part of the colourway for reasons or aesthetic fussiness, so i may have delved into a 4th. i did, however, keep all my bits and joined them into a ball (learned how to do the shmutz join around the same time) so it is not a waste. i also make it kinda big since it has arms and i wanted it loosey-goosey. alltogether, i am highly pleased! thanks to Stefanie Japel (Glampyre) for the very easy, very affordable pattern! Looking forward to her upcoming book!

cosmetics bag: trial # 1

makeup bag 1 crochet
Originally uploaded by myhighfiber.
a project i've been working on because of NEED. a felted cosmetics bag (my makeup is currently in a baggie)

1st trial. crocheted with scraps of manos del uruguay, 7 or 8mm hook. base rounded at ends to make an oval

Notes
- shrank little in height
- shrank alot in width
- too thick
- very nubbly
- like flat bottom
- organic aesthetic
- didn't bother blocking
- bottom shrank in a lot more than the top part

Changes?
- use DK weight yarn to crochet
- prefer a more portly body
- use solid colours
- use diff colours for each part for measuring simplicity (base diff colour than body, etc)
- make base proportionally larger

Dimensions (pre & post felt)
- base width 6":4.75"
- base length 9":7"
- body height 9":7"
- mouth width 10":9"

Birdy Bag

bird bag
Originally uploaded by myhighfiber.
another of the pprojects i HAD to finish ... my Birdy bag (aka bird carrier). I needed a bird carrier to transport Pluto to & from the store that was warm enough to keep him toasty in winter and cute enough to go into stores with him incognito.

Based on the Letter Bag from Stitch n Bitch nation, i applied the same principles but bulked it up to give it structure.
-used 2 strand of lamb's pride bulky for the side/bottom strip
- single strand of lamb's pride bulky for the front & back panels.
- changed the opening to overlapping flaps
- included air holes on each side to keep the air moving
- made it taller to keep birdy out of the wind (although he just climbs up the sides anyway and pokes his beak out the holes)
- handles knited flat but curled up to match the aesthetic of the i-cord decoration
- i knitted the icord on, but don't think it made a difference. 1 strand of lamb's pride bulky
